Analytical Chemistry Scientist
Overview
The Scientist is responsible for performing routine and complex sample analysis using analytical techniques accurately and efficiently following procedures. The analytical techniques include LCMS, ICPMS and HPLC using fluorescence and UV detection.
Responsibilities
Prepares solutions such as mobile phases and buffers
Performs automated and routine extractions
Performs validation and test development experiments
Performs routine tasks with high efficiency
Maintains and calibrates instruments and equipment as required
Performs LCMS and/or ICPMS and/or HPLC analysis following specified procedures
Monitor LCMS and/or ICPMS and/or HPLC system performance to ensure quality of results
Processes data following procedures and guidelines
Makes and records observations and performs mathematical calculations
Independently troubleshoots assays and instrumentation
Cleans laboratory glassware and helps maintain lab orderliness
Accomplishes all necessary and applicable training
Documents promptly and clearly all procedural processes
Assists with administrative duties
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelors degree in a scientific field
Experience:
LCMS and/or ICPMS and/or HPLC experience
Skills and Knowledge: Ability to understand written and verbal instructions. Must be able to work well with a variety of laboratory personnel. Excellent attention to detail. Basic computer knowledge. Must be able to work with constant interruptions. Ability to set and meet deadlines with high quality work. Ability to understand graphs, tables, charts and perform calculations needed for the task. Ability to follow and implement policies and Standard Operating Procedures.
Initiative, Judgement and Complexity: The Scientist works closely with other laboratory personnel. He or she is responsible for extracting and setting up analytical runs for LCMS and/or ICPMS and/or HPLC analyses. This includes organization of resources and time management to maximize the efficiency of each analytical run. Workload has highs and lows. During high volumes, they must be able to prioritize assigned work. During low volumes, they must be resourceful in determining areas of usefulness such as general cleaning and equipment maintenance.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to the Analytical Chemistry Production Supervisor and Manager
Physical Demands: Requires sitting and standing for long periods of time. Requires manipulation of tools, objects, laboratory instrumentation and equipment using the following physical motions: pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching above shoulder height, grasping with one hand or both, twisting and reaching, squatting, kneeling and exposure to potentially infectious biohazardous materials and/or hazardous fumes or chemicals. Routinely requires coordination of two or more physical operations. Requires ability to hear audible sounds. Lifting/carrying of objects weighing 1-50 pounds.
Mental Demands: Possible mental demands include, but are not limited to: reading, math, computer interaction, intense concentration, verbal communication, written communication, attention to detail, multiple tasks, frequent interruptions, fluctuation in workload.
Environmental Demands: Works in a temperature controlled environment. Works in a small, noisy environment. May be required to operate fire and safety equipment or follow other safety procedures in an emergency situation. May be required to work with time constraints and crisis situations. Works with potentially biohazardous material and/or hazardous chemicals or fumes.
Equipment Use: Possible equipment includes, but is not limited to: LCMS, ICPMS, HPLC, computers, calculators, rolling carts, fax machines, photocopiers, telephones, pipettors, pH meter, sonicators, centrifuges, vortexers, balances, automation instrumentation, centrifuge, evaporators, assorted glassware and other laboratory equipment.
Effect of Errors: The effect of errors in this position could result in failed or inaccurately performed procedures.
